Special Court for Gender Based Violence in Uganda

ACORD, CARE and the Inter-Religious Council recently held an advocacy meeting on access to justice for survivors of sexual gender-based violence.

At the meeting held in Kampala, Uganda, the Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP) asked the government to introduce specialized courts to handle cases of gender-based violence. The Principal State Attorney and Head of Gender and Sexual Offences Unit, Susan Okalany, said the government should devise measures that would effectively restrain actors of gender-based violence, adding that independent courts will help in curbing the violence once they are established.
