Voices of Youth

Publication Date: June 01, 2007
This research paper is a product of an inter-country research project entitled ‘Voices of Youth', a key component of a regional initiative called ‘Restoring Peace Project'1.

The research was conducted in Angola in July through October 2006 by Youth Ambassadors of Peace and Citizenship (JEPC), a youth citizenship project implemented by Development Workshop (DW). The Angola research is a third
component of the inter-country research. The other two components were carried out in Burundi and Uganda by ACORD and World Vision International respectively.

The inter-country research was designed in the context of a large vacuum in the documentation relating to the experiences of young people in situations of armed and violent conflict in Africa. In all the countries the research was carried out by a research team composed of representatives of young people affected by conflict.

The young people were involved directly in the planning, implementation and analysis of the research. To ensure that a common approach was maintained by the three country projects, a series of workshops was held which brought the three research teams together to plan and analyse the work and to facilitate networking between them. The workshops were hosted by each of the teams - and the co-ordinating team in Nairobi - in rotation, enabling them to experience each others' working environments.

The first workshop was held in Bujumbura in March 2006 and provided training in Social Exclusion
Analysis (SEA). The research teams gained skills in using SEA framework. They used the framework to sharpen the preparatory analysis, understand the situation of their target groups, and identified key research themes and respondent categories.

The Angola team chose to investigate youth participation in decision making while the Uganda and Burundi teams chose to investigate impunity for sexual violence.
