It is with sadness and great loss to learn that Dr. Tajudeen Abdul-Raheem has died following a road accident in Nairobi on this day, 25 May 2009, which is celebrated as the Africa Liberation Day.

 Dr. Tajudeen Abdul-Raheem

It is very difficult to pay tribute to a man who despite his greatness (in sound, laughter, stories and wealth of experience) exemplified humility in his dedication to the Pan African cause and who believed in passing this mantle to the next generation.

Dr. Tajudeen Abdul-Raheem was recognised for his outspokenness and strong leadership in campaigning for global justice, good governance, public accountability, human rights, democracy, regional integration and Pan Africanism.

We at Agency for Cooperation and Research in Development were fortunate, albeit briefly to encounter Dr. Raheem in a multitude of our own events, which he was always pleased to support in his official capacity as the Deputy Director of the United Nations Millennium Campaign but also as a dedicated Pan African campaigner who was keen to engage in progressive agendas on the continent as well as challenge those that he believed could be shifted in the right direction.

Burning Candle
He chose his day of departure one would argue, for Tajudeen dies on Africa Liberation Day, a day designated to celebrate the birth of the first attempts towards pushing for a united Africa through the formation of the Organisation for African Unity. A cause he continued to dedicate his life’s work and writings to until his demise.

While we mourn the sudden passing of this great man by all standards, we know that we must celebrate his life; we must keep the flame he lit on the continent and in each and everyone of us alive.

As he would say – 'Don’t Agonise, Organise!' And organise we shall.
