Leaders of 79 African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) countries are meeting in Accra, Ghana from September 30 to October 3rd, 2008 for the 6th ACP Summit in Accra. The status of play of the negotiations of the Economic Partnership Agreements (EPAs) is featuring prominently in the debates along with discussion on the rise in food prices, energy crisis and climate change and its effects on development of ACP states.Formed in 1975, the ACP group now comprises 48 Sub-Saharan Africa countries, 16 Caribbean and 15 Pacific states.

Kenyan STOP EPA protesters violently disbanded

STOP THINK RESIST EPA SLOGAN
Hundreds of people gathered at the KENCOM bus station on Friday 26 September, 2008 were forcibly prevented by police from protesting against the Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) negotiations. Despite the presentation of valid notification document, as well as a display of the city council permits, the Kenyan police proceeded to disperse the protesters. Several of the police violently ripped apart the protesters' STOP EPA posters and threatened to arrest them.

IV INTERNATIONAL FORUM on DEMOCRACY and COOPERATION

Pan-African Civil Society Preparatory Meeting to the IV International Forum on Democracy and Cooperation


Participatory Democracy, Sustainable Development, Decentralized Cooperation, Citizenship, and Inter-Cultural Exchanges:

These were the key issues debated by more than 60 CSOs representatives from West, East, South and North Africa in a meeting organized by Agency for Cooperation and Research in Development (ACORD) and Latin America and Africa Institute for Political Studies (IEPALA) in Nairobi, Kenya, from 15-16 May 2008.  

The meeting debated and defined common African CSOs perspectives in the global context of Democracy and Cooperation in and for Africa with the aim to develop innovative concepts and models that will lead to a Southern driven paradigm shift in global development.  


In the final communiqué the African CSOs state that the North will not provide the answer, criticizing the North-South power relationships that lead to dependency rather than autonomy and sovereignty. A strong appeal is also made to African governments, African Union and regional bodies to include African civil society in decision making. Furthermore the principles of food sovereignty must govern Africa’s long term agricultural policies which must address existing unfair landholding practices through appropriate and equitable land reform policies in order to achieve food sovereignty and sustainable development in Africa.

Ending Impunity on Sexual and Gender Based Violence: A Pan African Conference

In 2006, ACORD prioritized sexual and gender based violence in conflict and post conflict societies as a focus of its gender thematic work within the Pan African context. SGBV Brochure Our goal with this prioritization is to facilitate the development of a culture of effective and efficient gender justice in the states in Africa that have emerged from or are in conflict. This conference is a continuation of this focus in alliance with The Kenyan Human Rights Commission, Action Aid International-Africa, Coalition on Violence against Women, The Great Lakes Parliamentary Forum - Amani Forum, African Women's Development Fund, International Planned Parenthood Federation and Urgent Action Fund - Africa.
