Partners

ACORDs programmes are delivered together with a wide range of partners and communities in 17 African countries through a combination of practical work, research and advocacy. First established in 1976 in response to drought and poverty in the Sahel area, ACORD draws on the trusting relationships it has developed with communities and local governments over the years and the deep understanding of the issues and grassroots perspectives on development challenges.

Over the past 30 years ACORD has facilitated the emergence of over 2000 strong and autonomous grassroots organisations across Africa. Community owned and managed, these organisations today provide access to critical services and skills such as veterinary services, micro-finance and income generation activities and natural resource management. Most of the organisations have evolved to go beyond addressing immediate needs to also engage with decision-makers and represent their own interests, claiming community rights and demanding accountability.

Having achieved strong grassroots connections, ACORD engages at the Pan African and international level using its bottom-up informed learning and expertise of its activist staff across Africa. Besides its Africa wide coverage in Southern, Eastern & Horn, Central and Western Africa, ACORD benefits from its alliance with like-minded organisations in Africa, Europe, Canada and Hong Kong promoting global solidarity, forging South-North partnerships and demonstrating the complex linkages and impact of policies, such as trade and security on Africa's development. In collaboration with its international allies in four continents, ACORD is well placed to bring an African perspective, often weak in most of the Northern based forums, to demonstrate North-South linkages and to forge global partnerships around key issues.
